BUFFALO, N.Y. – The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team posted a 5-0 win for the second straight afternoon to secure the weekend sweep at Buffalo State in Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) West action Sunday afternoon.
Plattsburgh State (9-0-1, 5-0-0 ECAC West) got off to a quick start, scoring three goals in a 3:36 span in the opening frame. Allison Era scored on the power-play at the 8:23 mark from Teal Gove and Jenny Kistner. Two and a half minutes later, Kistner netted her seventh of the year to give the Cardinals a two-goal lead. Emma Rutherford added a short-handed goal at 11:59 to make it 3-0.
After the third Plattsburgh goal, Buffalo State (3-6-0, 2-4-0 ECAC West) called a timeout in an attempt to slow the Cardinals down. The Bengals were able to keep Plattsburgh off the board for the rest of the period, but struggled to generate any offense.
Kistner opened the second period with her second goal of the afternoon at the 3:30 mark. Plattsburgh added one more in the third when Era also tallied her second of the day with 3:27 remaining in regulation.
Era finished the day with two goals and two helpers while Kistner chipped in a pair of goals and an assist.
Plattsburgh’s Sydney Aveson recorded 13 saves to earn her first shutout of the season. Bengals goaltender Jordan Lee suffered the loss, stopping 35 of the 40 shots she faced.
The Cardinals will travel to Manhattanville next Friday for their final game of 2012. The non-conference game is set for 7 p.m. and will be played at Terry Conners Rink in Stamford, Conn.
