PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Teal Gove and Shannon Stewart each tallied three points as the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team skated to a 5-0 shutout against Chatham to open its Eastern College Athletic Conference West schedule Saturday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
Plattsburgh opened the scoring at the 12:22 mark of the first period on Kenzie Menzak’s first collegiate goal. Caitlin Gilligan took a shot from the point that was stopped by Chatham goaltender Megan Buchanan but Menzak was on the doorstep to bury the rebound and give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
The Cardinals made it 2-0 with 2:42 remaining in the opening stanza when Stewart’s shot was stopped by Buchanan but the puck popped out of the goalie’s glove and bounced across the goal line.
With 6:44 gone in the second period, Allison Era made a pass to Teal Gove who was located at the goal line to the left of Buchanan. Gove fired a cross-ice pass to Jenny Kistner who beat Buchanan inside the far post for the power-play goal to put Plattsburgh up by three.
Gove scored the next two for the Cardinals, giving her a team-best four goals on the year. Gove’s first of the game came at the 16:05 mark of the second from Shannon Stewart. She added another at 8:54 of the third period from Stewart and Bridget Balisy. Balisy’s shot deflected off a Chatham player before Stewart picked up the loose puck and found Gove in front for the Cardinals’ fifth goal of the game.
Plattsburgh (2-0-1, 1-0-0 ECAC West) dominated with a 71-7 advantage in shots on goal. Chatham (0-1-0, 0-1-0 ECAC West) went 0-for-2 on the power-play when the Cardinals were 1-for-8.
Buchanan recorded 66 saves in the loss for the Cougars. Plattsburgh’s Ally Ross turned away all seven shots she faced to earn her first shutout of the season.
