PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team overcame a short bench to defeat Bowdoin College, 4-1, in a non-conference game Saturday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
After a scoreless first period, Plattsburgh State (5-0-1) was able to break through with just 1:06 gone in the second period. Junior Allison Era skated around the Bowdoin defender at the top of the circle and fired a shot past Bowdoin goaltender Tara Connolly to give the Cardinals a 1-0 lead.
Less than two minutes later, Shannon Stewart made it 2-0, picking up a rebound from Breanne Bennett and Melissa McIver. McIver later scored a goal of her own later in the period to give Plattsburgh a three-goal lead.
After a Plattsburgh penalty and a Bowdoin (0-1-0) timeout, the Polar Bears got on the board at the 14:44 mark of the second when Jay Greene’s shot from the point went through Sydney Aveson’s five-hole. Kenzie Novak and Ariana Bourque picked up assists on Greene’s power-play goal.
Plattsburgh’s Alyssa Parke rounded out the scoring in the third, netting a power-play goal with assists to Andrea Ziesmann and Emma Rutherford.
The Cardinals were without the services of Jenny Kistner and lost Jordan Caldwell to an injury early in the game. Era, who was one of Plattsburgh’s starting blueliners, also centered a line with Caldwell and Chelsea VanGlahn.
Plattsburgh finished the day with 36 shots, while Bowdoin took 19. Both teams went 1-for-3 on the power-play.
Connolly made 32 stops for the Polar Bears. Aveson turned away 18 shots to improve to 3-0-1 for Plattsburgh.
A tough test awaits the Cardinals next weekend as Plattsburgh State travels to Middlebury for the Annual Panther/Cardinal Classic. Plattsburgh will open the tournament against Amherst on Saturday at 1 p.m. The Cardinals close out the tournament against the Panthers on Sunday at 4 p.m.
