PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team (7-12, 5-7 SUNYAC) snapped a five game losing streak as they held off a resilient Oneonta State (2-17, 1-11 SUNYAC) squad in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action, 67-64 Tuesday at Memorial Hall.
The Cardinals, who led by as many as 17, had to survive a late push by the Red Dragons as Kevin Donahue missed a three point attempt at the buzzer.
Despite the Cardinals eight point lead at the break, Frankie Kelly scored 14 of his 16 points in the second half to keep the Red Dragons within touching distance until the final buzzer.
John Perez finished a spectacular alley-oop play with a dunk to put the Cardinals up by 17 with 14:17 remaining in the game. The Red Dragons would not go away as they outscored the Cardinals 31-16 over the final 14 minutes to get within two points.
Ezra Hodgson put away a free throw with eight seconds left to put the Cardinals back up by three and that is how the game would stay.
Perez and Shavar Fields both scored a game-high 20 points. Perez went 8-for-11 from the field and Fields shot 6-of-9. Ketema Brooks gave out six assists in the game to bring his career total to 363. Brooks is now seven assists away from tying the program’s all-time record, which stands at 370.
The Cardinals shot 51.1 percent from the field for the game, while the Red Dragons shot 35.7 percent.
Kelly led the Red Dragons with his 16 points and Donahue added 11 points. Donahue was 4-for-9 off the bench.
The Cardinals are back in SUNYAC action at Memorial Hall this weekend when they host Buffalo State and Fredonia.
