PLATTBURGH, N.Y. – A second half comeback was not enough to help the Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team (6-12, 4-7 SUNYAC) as they lost 65-58 to SUNY Cortland (14-5, 9-3 SUNYAC) in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) action Saturday.
The Cardinals headed into the halftime break down by 14 points and a slow start to the second half left them down by 21
points just 2:51 into the half. Plattsburgh then mounted a furious comeback, going on a 24-6 run over 11 minutes to come within one point of the Red Dragons with 5:20 remaining.
Shavar Fields made a layup with 4:04 left to tie the game at 53-53, but Jesse Winter scored 10 of Cortland’s last 12 points to seal the game. Winter made two layups and six free throws in the last 3:44 of the game.
Fields and Jordan Moody both finished with a team-high 15 points. Fields went 7-for-12 from the floor and Moody made 4-of-8 from beyond the arc. Ketema Brooks dished out 11 assists to take his career total to 354. The all-time program record is 370.
Winter went 9-for-10 from the line and 4-of-8 from the field to lead the Red Dragons with 17 points. Brian Manning scored 16 points on 5-of-11 shooting and Jeremy Smith notched 10 points.
The Cardinals are back in action at Memorial Hall Tuesday January 31, when they host Oneonta in SUNYAC action. Tipoff is set for 6 p.m.
