PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team tallied three goals in the last 11 minutes en route to a 3-0 win over the Cortland Red Dragons in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play Friday afternoon at the Field House Soccer Complex.
The Cardinals (9-0-1, 1-0-1 SUNYAC) received some help from the Red Dragons in the 79th minute as a ball bounced off a Cortland defender and into the back of the net, giving Plattsburgh a late 1-0 lead.
Six minutes later, Nick Parella sent a pass to Steve Wilday, who fired a wide shot that found the lower left corner of the net for his first goal of the season.
Wilday struck again at 87:24, taking a feed from Parella and firing a shot past Cortland goalkeeper Tim Beauvais to give the Cardinals a three-goal lead in the final minutes of play.
The Red Dragons’ (1-4-5, 0-1-2 SUNYAC) best scoring chance came early in the game when Chris Barbosa blasted a high shot in the 1st minute that Andy Heighington was able to get a glove on and give Plattsburgh some early momentum.
Plattsburgh controlled play throughout most of the afternoon, holding the edge in shots (19-4) and corner kicks (7-3).
Heighington recorded two saves in his sixth shutout of the year. Beauvais made seven stops for the Red Dragons as his record falls to 0-1-2.
Plattsburgh returns to action tomorrow afternoon as the Oswego State Lakers come to town for a 1 p.m. match at the Field House Soccer Complex.
