POTSDAM, N.Y. (Sept. 21, 2011) - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team continued to roll Wednesday night with a 2-0 shutout in a non-conference game at Clarkson University.
The Cardinals scored twice in the first half to secure their seventh straight win. Steve Zacharczyk took the initial header off a Mike Payne corner kick, but it was Nick Parella who found the back of the net with a header of his own in the 29th minute.
Less than five minutes later at 34:00, Payne scored on a penalty kick to stretch the Plattsburgh lead to 2-0.
That proved to be all the offense the Cardinals would need as Plattsburgh outshot Clarkson, 15-7, including an 8-2 edge in the first half. Plattsburgh also held a lopsided 10-1 advantage in corner kicks.
Andy Heighington made four stops in his fourth shutout of the season. Clarkson goalkeeper Saverino Spagnolo recorded five saves in 84:50. Scott Stuart was untested in the final five minutes of play.
Plattsburgh improves to 7-0 heading into State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play this weekend. The Cardinals will host SUNY Potsdam on Saturday. Game time is set for 1 p.m. at the Field House Soccer Complex.
