GENESEO, N.Y. — Chris Ruiz posted a game-high 21 points and Errol Daniyan put together a double-double as the Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team salvaged a split of weekend State University of New York Athletic Conference games, taking out Geneseo Saturday, 67-58.
With the win, the Cardinals jump to 10-3 in SUNYAC play, 14-6 overall. The Blue Knights fall to 9-11, 3-10 in the SUNYAC.
Ruiz’s 21 points come on the heels of a 29-point performance Friday night against Brockport. He shot 8-for-14, including 2-for-5 from behind the arc. Daniyan contributed 13 points and 11 rebounds. He was the only other Cardinals in double figures in scoring.
A Geneseo shooting percentage of just 33.3 for the game helped the Cardinals to come away with the win. In the first half, Geneseo shot just 9-for-28 while the Cardinals were 12-for-27 to take a 13-point halftime lead at 33-20. Geneseo won the second half battle, outscoring the Cardinals 38-34, but the Blue Knights could not make up the deficit.
The Cardinals took the lead on a Ketema Brooks layup 3:24 into the first half and didn’t trail for the rest of the game. Despite being outscored in the second, the Cardinals led by five or more throughout the half.
Mike Hoy was the Blue Knights’ leading scorer with 19 points. Ethan Estabrooks contributed 15 points off the bench.
The Cardinals are back in action at Memorial Hall Friday, Feb. 11, at 8 p.m. against SUNYAC-leading Oswego. The Lakers (16-3, 12-1 SUNYAC) are currently No. 1 in the NCAA East Region rankings.
