PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Jared Docking knocked in the game-winning goal with 8:02 left in sudden victory overtime to give the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team a 4-3 victory over Morrisville in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) Quarterfinal game at the Stafford Ice Arena. The Cardinals improve to 18-7-1 overall. The Mustangs finish the season with an 11-13-1 record.
After a scoreless first period, Ryan Craig gave the Cardinals a 1-0 lead when he buried a centering pass from Nick Jensen at 6:56 of the second. Six minutes later, Eric Satim poked a puck past Morrisville goaltender Caylin Relkoff, stretching the lead to 2-0.
About a minute later, sophomore Tyler Swan cut the lead to 2-1 with his 10th of the year from Alex Tillaart and Ryan Marcuz.
The Mustangs got goals from Curtis Renaud and Derek Matheson to come back and take a 3-2 lead in the third period.
Craig tallied his second of the night, banging his own rebound over the line at the 13:08 mark of the third to tie the game at 3-3, sending the game to overtime.
Plattsburgh dominated much of the play throughout overtime before Docking came around the back of the net and beat Relkoff, sending the Cardinals to the SUNYAC semifinals.
The Cardinals outshot Morrisville, 44-29. Josh Leis got the call in net for Plattsburgh, recording 26 saves and improving to 15-4-1. Relkoff turned away 40 shots and finished the year with a 9-13-1 record.
In the other SUNYAC quarterfinal game, No. 6 Fredonia defeated No. 3 Buffalo State, 3-2. Fredonia will travel to No. 1 Oswego for a semifinal matchup Saturday, while Plattsburgh will travel to No. 2 Geneseo for the next round.
