Fields Nets 27 Points in Plattsburgh's 86-72 Win over New Paltz

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Shavar Fields netted 27 points to catapult the Plattsburgh State men’s basketball team to an 86-72 win over State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) rival New Paltz at Memorial Hall Tuesday night.

Plattsburgh improves to 3-4 overall, 1-2 in SUNYAC play. New Paltz drops to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in SUNYAC play.

The Cardinals led for most of the game, with Fields going off for 21 of his total points in the first half. John Perez pitched in with a double-double of 10 points and 11 rebounds. The Cards received strong play from the bench with Josh Bruno and Anthony Baker scoring 16 and 11 points respectively.

The Cardinals out rebounded the Hawks 43-32, especially dominating their offensive boards 20-6. Plattsburgh got to the free throw line 32 times, while sending New Paltz to the charity stripe 21 times. The Hawks shot an impressive 81 percent from the line, as Plattsburgh hit 65.6 percent.

Plattsburgh, who led 42-36 at the half, scored 13 of the first 17 points of the second half to take 55-40 lead. The Cardinals led by as much as 19 later in the half.

Matt Devine, tied for the game-high 27 points, tried to keep the Hawks in the game and Harris Wichard added 20 points of his own. Wichard finished with a team-best eight boards and four assists.

The Cardinals return to SUNYAC action as they host Geneseo on Friday at 8 p.m. and Brockport on Saturday at 4 p.m.
