PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Two Buffalo State goals in third period made this one too close for comfort, but the Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team was able to hang on and come away with a 3-2 win over the Bengals Sunday afternoon at the Stafford Ice Arena.
One line made all the noise Sunday afternoon for Plattsburgh (7-2-1, 6-0-1 ECAC West). Chelsea VanGlahn scored two goals and added an assist. Justine Fisher finished with a goal and an assist while Jordan Caldwell assisted on all three Cardinal goals.
VanGlahn scored the lone goal of the first period just 2:01 after the opening face-off. VanGlahn’s took a pass from Jordan Caldwell right in front of the net, finding the back of the net for her first of the afternoon.
VanGlahn struck again at 3:22 of the second period. Caldwell made a centering pass to VanGlahn in front of the net who found the back of the net with a nice back-handed shot. Justine Fisher gave the Cardinals a three-goal lead at 13:56 of the second with her second of the season. Caldwell and VanGlahn picked up assists on the eventual game-winner.
With just 14 seconds gone in the third period, Jeyna Minnick was able to poke a puck across the line after a scrum in front of the net to put Buffalo State (4-5-1, 3-4-1 ECAC West) on the board. At the 4:45 mark, the Bengals came within one as Christine Williams knocked one across the line in another scrum in front of Plattsburgh goaltender Sydney Aveson.
The Cardinals were able to hold on to the one-goal lead through the final 15 minutes, closing out the first semester unbeaten in conference play.
Plattsburgh fired 42 shots on goal while Buffalo State finished the day with 12 shots. Aveson recorded 10 saves in her sixth win of the year. Despite the loss, Bengals’ goaltender Jordan Lee gave another strong performance making 39 stops.
The Cardinals will close out the first half with two non-conference games. Plattsburgh travels to Norwich on Wednesday to take on the defending national champions at 7 p.m. The semester wraps with a game against Manhattanville at 3 p.m. on Saturday at the Stafford Ice Arena.
