MIDDLEBURY, Vt. – The Plattsburgh State men’s hockey was unable to solve the defense of the No. 1 Norwich Cadets, as the Cardinals fell, 3-0, in the first game of the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut at the Chip Kenyon Arena on the campus of Middlebury College.
Doug Lindensmith opened the scoring for the Cadets (5-0-0) at 12:05 of the first, poking the puck past Plattsburgh goaltender Mathieu Cadieux and defenseman Mike Grace, who both attempted to block the Cardinals’ net. Kyle Thomas and Corey Hale assisted on the Norwich goal.
With the Cardinals on the power-play, Norwich scored a short-handed goal to take a 2-0 lead at 3:13 of the second. Grace failed a clear attempt and Colin Mulvey picked up the loose puck, firing a shot past Cadieux to keep the Cadets in control of the game.
Plattsburgh (5-2-0) had its best scoring opportunity in the third period as Nick Jensen gathered a puck in front of the net and caught Cadets goalie Parker Carroll off-guard and hit a good chuck of pipe.
In the final second of regulation, Travis Janke put an end to Plattsburgh’s night with an unassisted empty-net goal.
Norwich outshot Plattsburgh, 18-12, while the Cardinals went 0-for-3 on the power-play. The Cadets finished the night 0-for-2 with the man-advantage.
Carroll improved to 4-0-0 with 12 saves in the shutout for Norwich. Cadieux falls to 3-2-0 for Plattsburgh, recording 15 saves.
Plattsburgh will await the outcome of tonight’s game between Elmira and Middlebury to determine its opponent for the third-place game set for 4 p.m. tomorrow.
