PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Ryan Farnan tallied a hat trick in the second period of Friday’s game to lead the Plattsburgh State men’s hockey team to a 6-1 win over Brockport in its home opener at the Stafford Ice Arena.

The Plattsburgh (4-1-0, 4-1-0 SUNYAC) offense was relentless as the Cardinals outshot Brockport, 59-26, including a 21-7 margin in the second period.

The Cardinals wasted no time Friday night as Nick Jensen scored with just 26 seconds gone in the game off a cross-ice pass from Mike Grace. Mark Constantine also picked up an assist on the goal.

In his first game of the season, Matt MacLeod stretched the lead to 2-1 at the 15:39 mark with an assist from Alex Jensen.

Farnan put on a show in the second period scoring three straight goals. Farnan’s first of the night came at 4:34 of the second from Kyle Kudroch. Less than four minutes later at 8:01, Farnan knocked home Kudroch’s rebound to make it 4-0. He made a move around a Brockport defender to complete the hat trick with an unassisted goal at 10:27.

Brockport (1-5-1, 1-4-1 SUNYAC) spoiled the shutout at 13:19 of the second as Troy Polino netted his first off the year from a tough angle to the left of Plattsburgh goaltender Mathieu Cadieux.

Thirteen second into the final period of play, Nick Jensen finished the night just how it started with an unassisted goal, his second of the night.

Cadieux got the start for Plattsburgh, allowing one goal on 23 shots and improving to 2-1-0. Despite allowing six goals in the loss, Oliver Wren recorded 53 saves for Brockport.

The Cardinals will host Geneseo tomorrow night at 7 p.m. for their final tune-up before the PrimeLink Great Northern ShootOut.
