NORTHFIELD, Vt. - John Perez scored 16 points as the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team topped Norwich University, 79-57, in a non-conference game to open the 2011-12 season.

Perez shot a perfect 6-for-6 from the field, 2-for-2 from beyond the arc and 2-for-2 from the free throw line to lead a Plattsburgh (1-0) offense that proved to be too much for the Cadets Tuesday night. Every member of the Plattsburgh roster registered at least two points as the Cardinals converted 58.2 percent of their field goal attempts and shot 64.3 percent from the charity stripe.

Senior Ketema Brooks and freshman Gary Tibbs contributed 10 points apiece. Brooks finished with a team-best six assists. Shavar Field and Shamoy McIntosh each grabbed six rebounds while McIntosh also added five assists in his collegiate debut.

Norwich (0-1) shot 18-for-49 from the field. Brandon Kuhre led the way with 14 points while Ryan Williams and Antonio Davis each picked up 10 points for the Cadets.

The Cardinals travel to the University of Rochester this weekend for the Chuck Resler Tournament. Plattsburgh will take on the host Yellowjackets Friday at 8 p.m. The consolation and championship games will follow on Saturday at 3 p.m. and 8 p.m. respectively.
