Men's Soccer Stumbles in 5-0 Loss at Oneonta

Boxscore and Play-by-Play

ONEONTA, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team could not stop the offense of the Oneonta State Red Dragons Saturday afternoon in a 5-0 loss in State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) play at Red Dragon Field.

The Cardinals (9-2-2, 1-2-2 SUNYAC) fell behind Oneonta, 2-0, after the first half on goals by Eric Fortier and Daniel Josepher.

The Red Dragons (8-2-2, 5-0-1 SUNYAC) continued the onslaught in the second half.  Justin Rivera scored back-to-back goals at 49:53 and 58:49, respectively, to stretch the Oneonta lead 4-0.

Josepher netted his second of the game in the 64th minute on a direct kick to give the Red Dragons a five-goal lead.

Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington made three saves before being lifted after Josepher’s second goal.  Mike Lind took over for the final 25:47, recording one save.  Max Siegelman improved to 7-1-2 for Oneonta with two stops.

Oneonta held a 14-8 advantage in shots and a 3-2 edge in corner kicks.  Joe Aratari, Pat Shaughnessy and Nate Economou each registered one shot on goal for the Cardinals.

The loss marks the largest margin of defeat for a Cardinal men’s team since a 5-0 loss at Union in the 1985 season.

Plattsburgh will look to turn the tide next weekend when SUNYAC opponents Fredonia and Buffalo State come to town.  The Cardinals will host the Blue Devils on Friday at 4 p.m., before facing the Bengals on Saturday at 1 p.m.
