Men's Soccer Suffers First Loss of the Year at New Paltz

Boxscore and Play-by-Play

NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Jimmy Altadonna’s goal in the 72nd minute proved to be enough for New Paltz, as the Hawks defeated the nationally ranked No. 12 Cardinal men’s soccer team, 1-0, to snap Plattsburgh’s 11-game unbeaten streak.

The two teams played to a scoreless first half, but despite Plattsburgh’s 10-6 shot advantage in the second half, New Paltz provided the only offense of the afternoon.

Senior forward Jimmy Altadonna’s goal at 72:05 became the difference-maker for the Hawks.  Evan Martel crossed in a pass to Altadonna from the left flank, allowing the senior forward to send the ball inside the right post from close range.

The Cardinals (9-1-2, 1-1-2 SUNYAC) held a slight edge in shots (17-16) and in corner kicks (5-4).   Senior Mike Payne led Plattsburgh with four shots on goal.

Conor Power recorded eight saves for the Hawks, who improve to 6-6-1, 2-2-1 in the SUNYAC.  Andy Heighington made five stops in the loss for the Cardinals.

Plattsburgh will look to rebound tomorrow afternoon against conference leader Oneonta State.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
