CANTON, N.Y. - St. Lawrence University’s received strong performances from their backs Wednesday as the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team fell 5-0 to the top-ranked Saints team to wrap up the regular season.
The backs did more than start the offense against a good Plattsburgh State team as senior Mike Manfredi scored his first career goal in his 72
nd career game to start the scoring and junior Nick Lincoln scored his first collegiate goal to give the Saints a 2-0 lead at the half.
The Saints tacked on three second half goals to improve to 15-0-0 overall. The Cardinals, who begin postseason play on Saturday, fall to 12-4-1 on the year.
Manfredi took a pass from junior midfielder Sam DeMello, made a move at the top of the bubble near the 18 yard stripe and fired a shot which hit the crossbar and deflected into the net behind Plattsburgh goalie Andy Heighington at the 30:33 mark. Lincoln scored his first goal of his collegiate career just 4:07 later as he took a pass from Shaka Pilgrim and unleashed a sizzler along the ground from the top of the box which slid inside the right post.
The Saints, who created some great chances that Heighington turned aside, tacked on three more in the second half. DeMello set up sophomore midfielder Andrew Bednarsky off a direct kick from outside the box on the right about 10 yards off the end line. DeMello’s hard ball along the ground was deflected past the Plattsburgh goalie at 56:43 to make it a 3-0 game. Manfredi then assisted on the fourth Saint goal as he put a corner kick into play with the ball bouncing off the crossbar and right to freshman Jeremiah Bunton, who scored his first career goal, cleaning up the rebound at 69:45.
DeMello completed the scoring for the Saints with his 11
th of the year, scoring on a diving header off a corner kick by JJ Tipton at 75:04.
The Saints outshot Plattsburgh 29-9 and had nine corner kicks. Heighington had seven saves in 75 minutes and Mike Lind had one in the final 15. Saint goalie Brian Abernethy played 80:22 with one save and shares the shutout with Nate Goss-Woliner who made one save in the final 9:38.
Plattsburgh will host SUNY Potsdam on Saturday for a 2 p.m. SUNYAC Quarterfinal matchup at the Field House Soccer Complex. Ticket prices for the quarterfinal game will be $5 general admission and $2 for college students who present a valid college id.
