BROCKPORT, N.Y. (Oct. 22, 2011) – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team dropped its State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) finale at Brockport, 3-1, Saturday afternoon.
The Golden Eagles, who improve to 11-3-1, 8-1-0 in the SUNYAC, scored three straight goals before Plattsburgh got on the board late in the second half. The Cardinals drop to 12-3-2 overall and 4-3-2 in conference play.
Brian Duffy scored on a penalty kick at 33:25 to give Brockport a 1-0 lead heading into the half. Brockport attacked early in the second half with a goal from Paul Altobelli at 48:37. Marc Orlando was credited with an assist on the goal. Brockport’s Kevin Dorn stretched it to a 3-0 lead in the 69
th minute with an unassisted goal.
At the 76:16 mark, Pat Shaughnessy scored off a scramble in front of the net, tallying the only Plattsburgh goal of the afternoon.
Brockport finished the day with 17 shots, while Plattsburgh fired 15. The Golden Eagles also held the edge in corner kicks, 6-1.
Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington recorded four saves on seven shots. Brockport goalie Kyle Saulin made seven stops in the win.
Despite Saturday’s loss, the Cardinals have secured a spot in the SUNYAC playoffs. Both Plattsburgh and Potsdam finish tied with 14 points, but the Cardinals have the tiebreaker and will enter the postseason at the fourth seed.
Plattsburgh will wrap up the regular season on Wednesday with a non-conference game at nationally ranked No. 1 Saint Lawrence. Game time is scheduled for 3 p.m.
