Cardinals Down Geneseo, 2-1, in SUNYAC Men's Soccer

Pat Shaughnessy scored the game-winning goal in Plattsburgh's 2-1 win over Geneseo.

GENESEO, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team scored a goal in each half to top the Geneseo Blue Knights, 2-1, in a State University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC) matchup at Saratoga Field. 
 
Geneseo struck first at 14:13 on a James Hainsworth goal from Jop Smit but Plattsburgh responded a little over a minute later to tie the game at 1-1.  Tom Greene found the back of the net on a misplay by Geneseo goalkeeper Sam Murphy.  Mike Payne assisted on Greene’s goal at 15:46
 
The game was knotted until the 81st minute when Pat Shaughnessy knocked in Greene’s rebound to give the Cardinals a late 2-1 lead.
 
Geneseo (8-6-1, 5-3-0 SUNYAC) held a 17-13 edge in shots and a 7-0 advantage in corners.  With the win, Plattsburgh (12-2-2, 4-2-2 SUNYAC) moves sole possession of fourth place in the conference standing heading in its final SUNYAC game on Saturday.
 
Andy Heighington recorded four saves on five shots in the Plattsburgh net.  Murphy made four stops for Geneseo in the loss.
 
The Cardinals return to action tomorrow at Brockport.  Game time is set for 1 p.m.
