PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Pat Shaughnessy tallied five points to lift the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team to a 3-1 over Buffalo State in a State University of New York Athletic Conference game (SUNYAC) Saturday afternoon at the Field House Soccer Complex.
Shaughnessy scored his first of two goals at the 8:59 mark on a header off a cross from Mike Payne, providing all the offense for the first half.
Buffalo State (6-6-2, 1-6-0 SUNYAC) tied it up at 54:42 on Kirk Love’s sixth of the year from Tony Schiappa but the Cardinals squashed the Bengals’ momentum with a goal of their own just 11 seconds later. Bengals’ goalkeeper Ben Spillman made a diving stop on a shot from outside the box that was ripped by Payne, but Shaughnessy was there to head in the rebound to give the Cardinals a 2-1 lead.
At 68:41, Steve Wilday added an insurance goal on a feed from Shaughnessy, stretching the Plattsburgh lead to 3-1.
Plattsburgh (11-2-2, 3-2-2 SUNYAC) held the edge in shots (15-8) and corner kicks (3-2). Andy Heighington made one save in the win for the Cardinals. Spillman recorded five saves for the Bengals.
Plattsburgh wraps up its conference schedule next weekend on the road. The Cardinals will face Geneseo Friday at 3 p.m. before travelling to Brockport for a 1 p.m. game on Saturday.
