Men's Soccer Rolls to 4-1 Win over Fredonia State

Boxscore and Play-by-Play

FREDONIA, N.Y. – With just 1:10 gone in the game, Tom Greene fired a shot that set the tone for the rest of the game as the Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team defeated Fredonia State, 4-1, in a conference game at the Field House Soccer Complex.

Fredonia goalkeeper Bobby McGinnis made a diving attempt to stop Greene’s shot, but the ball deflected off his hands and across the goal line to give the Cardinals an early 1-0 lead.  Pat Shaughnessy picked up an assist on the goal.

Shaughnessy tallied his own goal at the 22:27 mark, for his eighth of the year from Joe Aratari. Sean Murphy gave Plattsburgh a three-goal lead on a header goal from Mike Payne at 33:08.

Jake Persons put the Blue Devils on the board at 49:38 with a header off of Cory Paine’s corner kick.  Plattsburgh answered back less than four minutes later as Nick Parella found the back of the net for his fifth of the year from Shaughnessy, who finished the evening with a goal and two assists.

Goalkeeper Andy Heighington made one stop in his tenth win for the Cardinals.  Bobby McGinnis suffered the loss for Fredonia, allowing four goals and stopping two shots.  A.J. Grecco replaced McGinnis for the final 10:30 but was untested in net.

Plattsburgh (10-2-2, 2-2-2 SUNYAC) outshot Fredonia (10-5-0, 3-3-0 SUNYAC), 11-7, while the Blue Devils held a 6-3 edge in corners.

The Cardinals host Buffalo State Saturday afternoon for a 1 p.m. conference game.
