PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--The nationally No. 22-ranked Plattsburgh State men's basketball team lost its first State University of New York Athletic Conference game of the season on Saturday after falling to visiting Brockport, 75-65, at Memorial Hall. The Cardinals drop to 7-4 overall and 3-1 in the conference, while the Golden Eagles improve to 4-6 and 2-1 in the SUNYAC.
Steve Thomas of Plattsburgh led all scorers with 21 points on 10 of 13 free throws. Chris Ruiz contributed 14 points. Ketema Brooks chipped in five assists.
Kyheem Green led Brockport with 18 points on 7-of-9 field goal shooting and 12 rebounds. Francisco Lantigua added 16 points on 6-of-7 from the field and six rebounds, and Kazeem Are and Gerald Williams each had 13 points. Derek Klein dished a game-best eight assists.
Brockport shot 57.8 percent from the field, including 68.2 in the second half, and took advantage of Plattsburgh mistakes. The Cardinals missed 12 free throw attempts and shot only 64.7 percent from the line and had 12 turnovers that resulted in 22 points for the opposition. The Golden Eagles dominated inside the paint, 34-20, and outrebounded the home team 33 to 25.
With Brockport leading 64-60 and 2 minutes, 6 seconds left, Green grabbed a key offensive rebound after a missed Are free throw attempt to keep possession for the Golden Eagles. Plattsburgh had to foul to try to get the ball back and Brockport made free throws down the stretch to seal the double-digit victory.
After Brockport opened the scoring 19-10, Plattsburgh answered with an 11-0 run in a 2:59 span to take a 21-19 lead. Plattsburgh led at halftime, 30-28, after a layup by Errol Daniyan at the buzzer.
Plattsburgh eventually built an eight-point advantage in the second half.
