PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Visiting Elms College upset nationally No. 22-ranked Plattsburgh State, 70-58, in a non-conference men's basketball game on Wednesday at Memorial Hall, spoiling a double-double performance by the Cardinals' Errol Daniyan. The Blazers improve to 7-4 overall while the Cardinals drop to 6-3, losing back-to-back games after the holiday break.
Daniyan led all players with 23 points on 10-of-15 shooting, 15 rebounds and five blocked shots, but Plattsburgh shot only 37 percent from the field, missed 10 free throw attempts and had 19 turnovers that resulted in 30 Blazers' points.
Daniel Gonzalez paced the Blazers with 16 points, followed by bench contributions from Edgar Martinez with 15 and Cecil Avant, 10. Martinez also had nine rebounds and two blocks.
Elms led by nine points at 25-16 with 5 minutes and 1 second left in the first half before Chris Ruiz hit a jumper to ignite a Plattsburgh 14-5 run to close the half. The teams were tied 30-all at the break.
The teams traded points to begin the second half, but Elms was in control for the rest of the game.
Ruiz finished with six points to give him 1,269 for his career, passing Cardinal Hall of Famer Todd Wright (1267 from 1988-92) for fourth place on the school's all-time scoring list. Daniyan moved into sole possession of ninth on the career rebounding chart with 616, and now has 69 blocks for 10th. Ketema Brooks dished a game-high six assists to move past Curtis Smith (229 from 2003-05) for ninth all-time with 234.
