PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Chris Ruiz scored a game-high 15 points to help the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team to a 64-58 victory Friday night over Fredonia State in State University of New York Athletic Conference action at Memorial Hall. The Cardinals improve to 9-5 overall, including 5-2 in the SUNYAC, while the Blue Devils dip to 5-8 and 2-5 in the conference.
The Cardinals also got double-digit performances off the bench from Carl Munnerlyn with 13 points and Steve Thomas had 11.
Johnathan Herrera led Fredonia with 15 points, followed by Branden McKenney with 13, Adam Smith had 12 and Damien Goodwin II, 11.
Plattsburgh enjoyed a 34-28 advantage on the glass, with Errol Daniyan and Munnerlyn both leading the way with five rebounds. Sean Donahue had seven boards and Smith, six, for the Blue Devils.
The Cardinals outscored the Blue Devils at the free throw line 15 to 3 because of their attacking style of play at the basket. Plattsburgh also kept the visitors in the game by missing 11 attempts, but Fredonia couldn't capitalize. With 1 minute and 20 seconds left and Plattsburgh clinging to a 59-55 lead, Fredonia missed three field goals and had a turnover among its last five possessions after six missed Cardinal free throws.
