PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – With a two-man advantage and 2:25 to play in regulation, Amherst’s Courtney Hanlon netted her sixth of the year to send the first game of the Cardinal-Panther Classic into overtime. After a scoreless overtime period, the Lord Jeffs went on to win the shootout, 2-0, to advance to Monday’s championship game.
Steph Moon took a feed from Allison Era to break the scoreless tie at 4:16 of the third period. With less than four minutes to play, Plattsburgh’s lead was jeopardized late in the period as the Cardinals took two penalties within a minute.
Amherst’s Ellen Swiontkowski and Stephanie Clegg were credited with assists on Hanlon’s game-tying goal.
Hanlon and Geneva Lloyd beat Plattsburgh goalie Mandy Mackrell in the shootout, securing Amherst’s spot in the championship game.
Mackrell recorded 25 saves for the Cardinals. Amherst goaltender Caroline Hu had 22 stops for the Lord Jeffs.
Plattsburgh will take on the Middlebury College Panthers in Monday's third place game, which is set for 7 p.m.
