OSWEGO, N.Y.--Chris Ruiz scored 19 points and Steve Thomas added 15 for the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team on Saturday, but host Oswego prevailed 72-65 in a matchup of first place teams in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. The Lakers (9-3 overall) maintain their grip atop the conference standings at 5-1 while the Cardinals (8-5) fall to a third-place tie with New Paltz, both at 4-2 in the SUNYAC.
Chad Burridge led Oswego with 22 points, going 10 of 16 at the free throw line. Chris Gilkes posted a double-double with 12 points and 11 rebounds off the bench and reserve Conor Monaghan also scored 12 points.
Both teams shot poorly from the field at under 40 percent, but the Lakers scored 10 more field goals, 26-19, as a result of 14 offensive rebounds to get second scoring opportunities.
Errol Daniyan, Reggie Williams and Thomas each had six rebounds for Plattsburgh, which led 33-32 at the half.
