PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Matt Hamilton scored two goals, Chris Taylor continued to climb the Plattsburgh State men's soccer career assists chart, and the Cardinals rebounded from a rough game yesterday afternoon to blank visiting Geneseo, 3-0, on Saturday at the Field House Complex. The Blue Knights fall to 4-3-1 overall while the Cardinals improve to 7-1-1; both teams are now 1-1 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference standings.
A day after suffering its worst home loss in 19 years at the hands of Brockport, Plattsburgh played more of its ball-possession game and pinned an identical result on Geneseo.
Hamilton notched his first goal of the season in the 42nd minute. Taylor blasted a direct kick off the crossbar from 22 yards out and Hamilton was there to head in the rebound from right in front. Taylor was credited with his fifth assist of the season and 30th of his career--tying him with three-time All-America midfielder Jason Sousa (2002-05) for second all-time.
Taylor made it 2-0 in the 54th minute when he curled a free kick from 30 yards out into the upper-left corner of the goal. Hamilton sealed the win with another tally in the 81st minute, taking a feed from Pat Shaughnessy.
Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington made five saves to earn his sixth shutout of the year.
Ian Mort and Yuta Shimizu had three shots apiece to pace Geneseo, which held a 7-5 edge in corner kicks but was outshot 17 to 14--including 11-5 in the second half.
