PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Mike Breman scored two first-half goals to propel the College of Brockport to a 3-0 victory Friday versus Plattsburgh State in the State University of New York Athletic Conference men's soccer opener for both teams. This was a rematch of last year's conference championship game that officially ended in a scoreless draw, but the Golden Eagles prevailed in a penalty-kick shootout 11 to 10.
The Golden Eagles improve to 5-0-2 overall while extending their opponents' scoreless streak to 590 minutes and 15 seconds. The Cardinals (6-1-1), meanwhile, lose their first game of the season in eight starts and see their 15-game unbeaten streak during the regular season snapped. Today marked Plattsburgh's worst loss at the Field House Complex since the 1991 season when Clarkson won here, 4-1.
Breman scored his first goal of the afternoon in the 17th minute, which was the first tally surrendered at home by the Cardinals since Oct. 20, 2009--a string of 739:07. He struck again in the 35th minute on a feed from Bobby Ross, who scored himself on a Jeff Palumbo corner kick in the second half to seal the win.
The Plattsburgh offense was outshot for just the second time this season, 23 to 12, falling to 1-1 in such situations. Anis Makaren had one of the few solid scoring chances late in the first half, but his flick-on from close range went wide of the left post. Captain Chris Taylor had two shots on goal.
