SARATOGA SPRINGS, N.Y.--The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team won its fourth game in a row on Saturday night, edging host Skidmore, 1-0, in non-conference action at Wachenheim Field. The Cardinals move to 6-0-1 on the season while the Thoroughbreds fall even to 3-3-1.
Sophomore defender Joey Jones notched the only goal of the game in the 15th minute, heading Chris Taylor's free kick past Skidmore keeper Nick Peterson. The scoring play marked Jones' first career point and gives Taylor 29 career assists, tying him with Chris Gondek (1995-98) for third place on the school list.
Skidmore’s best scoring chances came in the second half. Matt Kelsey had a header in the box in the 73rd minute that Plattsburgh keeper Andy Heighington played perfectly. Kelsey had another dangerous shot in the 76th minute, but Heighington was in position again to make the save.
The Cardinals had a 14-8 shots advantage and 5-4 edge in corner kicks. Heighington finished with three saves for his fifth shutout of 2010 and the 14th of his career, while Peterson had five stops.
