PURCHASE, N.Y.--Pat Shaughnessy scored the eventual game-winning goal off a rebound midway through the second half as the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team came from behind on Saturday to nip Baruch, 2-1, at the Manhattanville Classic at GoValiants.com Field.
Danny Byrnes tied the game at 1-all for Plattsburgh (4-0-1) to get off to a solid second-half start. In the 47th minute, Stjepan Bandov sent a pass over the top of the Bearcat defense and Byrnes dribbled into the box one-on-one against the keeper to score his first goal of the season, beating Michael Murphy to the right. Murphy finished with 13 saves.
Plattsburgh's scoreless streak of 389 minutes versus opponents ended on a set piece for the Bearcats, who drop even to 2-2-1. In the 10th minute, Alvaro Velasquez bent a direct kick from 19 yards out into the upper-left corner of the goal.
Shaughnessy tied for the team goal-scoring lead when he followed up a header shot by Bart Misiak in the 69th minute.
Plattsburgh dominated in shots (24 to 4) and corner kicks (11 to 1).
The teams combined for 19 fouls, including four yellow cards--three issued to the Cardinals.
