CANTON, N.Y.--The Plattsburgh State volleyball team lost a pair of matches--to Saint Lawrence, 3-0, and Oswego, 3-1--during the first day of the Victory Promotions Invitational held on the campus of Saint Lawrence University on Friday.

In the opener, the host Saints dealt a 25-20, 25-23, 25-16 blow to the Cardinals, who finished the night with a 0-5 mark on the season.

Rosi Cummings and Abby Mell paced the Cardinal offense with six and five kills, respectively. Cummings also had nine digs while Mell added two blocks and two digs.

Kayla Nason chipped in 13 assists to go along with three digs and two blocks.

"We had difficulty in transition and couldn't put the ball down," Plattsburgh coach Dena O'Connell said about her team's play versus SLU.

Later, the Lakers won in four sets at 25-21, 25-20, 18-25, 25-23.

"The ladies did a great job in games three and four. If we can play like that, then we can compete against any opponent this season," O'Connell said. "We played smart, we blocked, we communicated on the floor. It's just a matter of confidence."

The Cardinals were led by Kristin Saheim, who had seven kills and four blocks; Nason, 23 assists; Theresa Lilly, 5 blocks; Cummings, 7 kills; and Mell, 6 kills and 4 blocks.
