Boxscore and Play-by-Play
PURCHASE, N.Y.--Mike Payne scored the only goal of the game in the first half and Plattsburgh State's stout defense made that stand up as the visiting Cardinals defeated Manhattanville, 1-0, in the opening round of the Valiant Classic Tournament in men's soccer on Friday.
The Cardinals, who have yet to yield a goal this season, move to 3-0-1 while the Valiants drop to 1-2.
Payne registered his third goal in the 24th minute on a crossing pass from Stjepan Bandov.
Andy Heighington (2-0-1) made a season-high five saves for Plattsburgh, which was uncharacteristically outshot by Manhattanville by a 13-3 count
For the Valiants, Jason Torres had one save and Keston George got off three shots.
It was a physical game in which the teams were whistled for 27 fouls and issued three yellow cards--two charged to Cardinals' players Bart Misiak and John LoGuirato.
