Plattsburgh Escapes with Record-17th ECAC-West Victory

Cardinals Win, 3-2, to Sweep Lakers

OSWEGO, N.Y. - The top-ranked Plattsburgh State women's hockey team (22-1-2 overall) wrapped up the regular season on Saturday with a 3-2 victory over a pesky Oswego State squad at the Campus Center Ice Arena, earning the Cardinals' program record 17th Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division win (17-0-1). The Lakers fall to 7-17-1 and 5-12-1 in the conference.  BOXSCORE

Kate Fairfield and Megan DiJulio scored third period goals to put the Cardinals up 3-1 before Jillian Bergeron got a power play goal at the 13:54 mark to pull the Lakers within one.

Oswego goaltender Emi Williams was stellar between the pipes, making 61 saves to ensure the closest final result in the nine-game series between the schools.

Trying to force overtime with the tying goal, Oswego made things interesting late in the third period by pulling Williams in favor of an extra attacker with 38 seconds left and then going on the power play after Kara Buehler was whistled for tripping with 15 seconds remaining.  But goalie Anne Loewen made two key saves to preserve Plattsburgh's 17-game unbeaten streak, which is the longest in the nation. She finished with 12 saves to earn her sixth win of the season.

Despite being outshot 17-3, Oswego scored the only goal of the first period off the stick of Jenna Kirkwood from Kelly Collins.

Brittany Meade tied it 1-1 with a power play goal in the second period on assists by DiJulio and Steph Moon.

The inaugural 2001-02 Plattsburgh squad went 16-2-2 in the ECAC West.
