PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Carl Munnerlyn equaled his career high with a game-best 23 points and Errol Daniyan added 22 to help propel the Plattsburgh State (5-1 overall) men's basketball team to an 87-73 victory Friday over New Paltz (3-2) at Memorial Hall in the State University of New York Athletic Conference opener for both teams.

Harris Wichard had 23 points and eight rebounds and Nick Taldi scored 16 points for the Hawks.

Chris Ruiz contributed 18 points to give him 1,243 for his career at Plattsburgh, passing Bryant Butler (1232 from 1995-98) and Murray Bullock (1235 from 1955-57) for fifth place on the school's all-time scoring list. No. 4 Todd Wright is next with 1,267, which he scored from 1989-92.

Plattsburgh came out on fire racing to a 13-2 lead and shooting nearly 70 percent from the field at the midpoint of the first half. The Cardinals led 49-29 at the intermission.

In the second half, Plattsburgh built as much as a 26-point lead, 57-31, with 16:45 to play. Then the Cardinals' shooting touch eluded them and New Paltz played better to close within seven points on a couple of occasions. However, Munnerlyn scored five points during a 6-0 run to quickly rebuild the lead to double-digits.
