PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – The Plattsburgh State women’s hockey team bounced back with a strong performance against a tough Elmira team, defeating the Soaring Eagles 2-1, in Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division play. The Cardinals finish the first semester at 8-1-0 and 6-1-0 in conference play.
While the game remained scoreless after one period, Plattsburgh dominated much of the play, outshooting Elmira 14-1 in the first period.
Megan DiJulio broke the scoreless tie at 1:04 of the second period, as she knocked in a power-play goal from Erika Shaubel and Steph Moon. Kylie Klassen added her fifth of the year late in the period from Brittany Meade.
With the extra attacker on in the third period, Elmira’s Tanis Lamoureux tallied her fifth of the season to cut the Plattsburgh lead to 2-1 in the final minute of play.
The Cardinals outshot the Soaring Eagles, 38-15. Mandy Mackrell picked up her sixth win, recording 14 saves. Lauren Sullivan made 36 stops between the pipes for Elmira.
Plattsburgh will return to action on Sunday, January 2nd, as they host Amherst at 3:30 p.m. in the first game of the Cardinal/Panther Classic. Elmira and Middlebury will also travel to the Stafford Ice Arena for the tournament and are schedule to play at 7 p.m.
