PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. – Madison Johnston’s power-play goal with just a little more than a minute gone in the second period proved to be the difference-maker as Elmira defeated Plattsburgh, 3-2, in a close ECAC West Women’s Division matchup. The loss marks the first of the season for the Cardinals, who drop to 7-1-0.
Despite the outcome, Plattsburgh did strike first on Kayla Colang’s second of the year from Kate Fairfield and Helen Giroux at 7:04 of the first period. Elmira evened the score when Lindsay Mitchell took a shot that bounced off Plattsburgh goalie Mandy Mackrell’s skate and rolled across the line at 9:55.
Tanis Lamoureux’s unassisted goal put the Soaring Eagles up by one at 14:19. The Cardinals answered with just 23 seconds to play in the period on Kylie Klassen’s power-play goal from Alanna Moir and Allison Era.
Johnston’s goal in the second period was all the Soaring Eagles would need the rest of the way. The Cardinals held the edge in shots, 27-17. Mackrell made 14 stops for Plattsburgh, while Elmira goaltender Lauren Sullivan recorded 25 saves.
Both teams return to the ice tomorrow afternoon at 3 p.m. to wrap up the weekend series.
