ONEONTA, N.Y.--Plattsburgh State squandered a pair of one-goal leads in regulation against host Oneonta on Friday, but prevailed in the penalty-kick shootout, 5-3, to advance to tomorrow's State University of New York Athletic Conference championship game. Plattsburgh will play Brockport, a 1-0 double overtime winner over Fredonia in today's other semifinal, at 11 a.m. Saturday.
The official result of the first semifinal on Red Dragon Soccer Field is a 2-2 tie between the fourth-seeded Cardinals and top-seed Red Dragons. Plattsburgh now stands at 13-4-3 overall while Oneonta is 11-4-4.
Plattsburgh converted all five attempts in the penalty-kick round, including Mike Payne who was the last shooter to clinch. Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington stopped Oneonta's fourth shooter, Jeff Christian, to set up Payne's winning try.
Pat Shaughnessy scored both Cardinal goals--his first in the 49th minute for 1-0 lead and his second in the 82nd for a 2-1 advantage. The junior forward paces the team with eight on the season.
The Red Dragons forced overtime with just 2 minutes and 50 seconds left in regulation. Matthew Brown sent a long pass from midfield to the top of the penalty area where Plattsburgh goalkeeper Andy Heighington attempted to punch the ball away, but Dan Josepher beat him to the spot and headed his seventh goal from 18 yards out.
Trailing 1-0 in the second half, Oneonta got the equalizer in the 53rd minute on Nicholas Gregg's first goal of the year off a corner kick from Dan Scott.
Oneonta nearly won the contest in the second sudden-victory overtime when Scott's blast from 27 yards bounced off the crossbar and over the goal.
Plattsburgh held advantages of 15-9 in shots and 7-2 in corners for the game.
