PURCHASE, N.Y.--Errol Daniyan scored a game-high 18 points and etched his name into the Plattsburgh State men's basketball record books, but the Cardinals couldn't overcome Western Connecticut State's long-range game in an 86-80 upset loss to the Colonials during the first round of the Manhattanville Castle Classic on Friday. The 22nd-ranked Cardinals fall to 1-1 on the season while WestConn improves to 3-0.
Daniyan, who made eight of his 11 shots from the field, became the 13th Cardinal ever to score 1,000 points. The senior now has 1,002 points for his career and trails Ronnie Wright (1,016; 1976-77) for No. 12 on the school's all-time scoring list.
R.J. Ponesse and Carl Munnerlyn added 16 points apiece and Steve Thomas chipped in 14. Daniyan and Thomas both had eight rebounds.
Gary Robinson netted 17 points to help give Bob Campbell his 500th coaching victory. Wilburt Jarrett and Daquan Brooks contributed 16 points each and Ronnie Underwood, 12. Robinson posted nine rebounds.
The Colonials won the game from the perimeter, sinking 10-of-19 3-pointers for 52.6 percent while holding Plattsburgh to 13.3 (2-of-15).
