PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Despite being outshot 34 to 20 by the hosts, Morrisville State upset nationally No. 8-ranked Plattsburgh State, 3-2, in State University of New York Athletic Conference men's hockey action at the Stafford Ice Arena on Saturday. The Mustangs, who win for the first time in the seven-game series, improved to 3-2 overall (3-1 SUNYAC) while the Cardinals drop to 2-3 both overall and in conference play.
Dylan Clarke scored a power play goal, his team leading fourth of the season, to cut Plattsburgh's deficit to 2-1 midway through the third period. After Morrisville regained its two-goal lead at 12:29 with a power-play goal of its own off the stick of Chris Cerbino, Mike Grace pulled the Cardinals within one again 3 minutes and 50 seconds later.
Plattsburgh coach Bob Emery pulled goaltender Ryan Williams in favor of an extra skater for the final 1:36, plus Morrisville was whistled for a minor penalty to give the Cardinals a 6-on-4 advantage. However, the Cardinals couldn't get a shot on goal to have a chance of tying the game and forcing overtime.
Derek Matheson gave Morrisville a 1-0 advantage with just 52 seconds remaining in the opening stanza. Matt Salmon made it 2-0 after two periods.
Morrisville's Caylin Relkoff made 32 saves to earn Second Star of the Game honors. Williams finished with 17.
