PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.--Plattsburgh State advanced to the semifinals of the State University of New York Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Tournament on Saturday by downing Geneseo 5-3 on penalty kicks, following the teams' 1-1 draw after 90 minutes of regulation and two 10-minute overtime periods. The Cardinals, the No. 4 seed, now stand at 13-4-2 while the fifth-seeded Blue Knights likely end their season at 9-7-2.

Plattsburgh travels to Oneonta on Friday (11 a.m.) to face the top-seeded Red Dragons in the next round. The Cardinals won the Oct. 8 regular season meeting at home, 4-0.

Plattsburgh converted on all five of its penalty kick attempts, including Bart Misiak, Chris Taylor, John LoGuirato, Gurtej Dhillon and Mike Payne. Ben Ariola, Colin Begy and James Hainsworth made their shots for Geneseo, but SUNYAC goal-scoring leader Ian Mort missed the opening shot off the left post to set up Payne's clinching goal.

Geneseo's Pat Lynch stunned the Field House Soccer Complex crowd with the tying goal in the 81st minute that forced overtime. Lynch, a defender, sent a long drive from 35 yards out into the box where the ball deflected off a Plattsburgh defender into the lower right-hand corner. It was the freshman's first career goal.

Stjepan Bandov gave Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead in the 33rd minute with his second goal of the season, assisted by Taylor who has a SUNYAC-leading 11.

The Blue Knights nearly won the game in the 96th minute when Ariola's strong header just missed left of goal after a corner kick.
