GENESEO, N.Y. - Steve Thomas led the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team to victory over State University of New York Athletic Coference foe Geneseo with a season-high 27 points. The Cardinals won the game by a score of 65-58.
Plattsburgh moves up to 4-4 in the SUNYAC, 9-6 for the season, and Geneseo drops to 3-5 in conference play, 4-11 overall.
Plattsburgh jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead after Steve Thomas scored the first layup of the contest, but Geneseo countered almost immediately and would hold tight to the lead for the next 11 minutes. When the Cardinals retook the lead with 7:50 left in the half it was thanks, again, to a Steve Thomas layup. Thomas would add another point seconds later with a made free-throw, and the Cardinals led increased to five (21-16) a little over a minute later when Danny Tangney sank a shot from behind the arc.
Plattsburgh would enter the half with a 24-18 lead and stay ahead of the Blue Knights for the rest of the contest.
Along with leading the Cardinals in scoring, Steve Thomas matched Ketema Brooks for a team-high six rebounds. Brook also led the team with five assists. Carl Munnerlyn followed Thomas in points, sinking 13 of his own during the contest. Errol Daniyan blocked four shots.
For Geneseo, Brandon Simpson topped the team with 18 points and Kyle Stevens added 14. Abe Miller pulled down seven boards and Mike Baker dished out a game-high eight assists.
Plattsburgh returns to action next Tuesday at Potsdam. Tip-off is set for 8 p.m.
