PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Carl Munnerlyn went 4-for-6 from behind the arc and 7-for-9 from the charity stripe, totaling 23 points during the game, to help lift the Plattsburgh State men's basketball team past the visiting Oswego Lakers, 88-80. A day before against Cortland, Munnerlyn went 6-for-6 from behind the three-point line and did not miss one again until six and half minutes into the second half of Plattsburgh's game against the Lakers.
The Cardinals break a four-game losing streak to move up to 8-5 on the year, 3-3 in the State University of New York Athletic Conference. Meanwhile, Oswego drops to 7-5 overall, 2-4 in conference play.
For the entire game, the lead bounced back and forth between the two teams, but Plattsburgh pulled ahead when it mattered most. The Cardinals led at both halftime (44-43) and when the last buzzer sounded. As a team, Plattsburgh shot 59.3% (32-54) from the field, 52.9% (9-17) from behind the arc and 68.2% (15-22) from the free-throw line to post its most solid numbers since returning from winter break.
Plattsburgh took its final lead of the game with 1:55 left to play after Farris Thomas sank jumper, placing the Cardinals in front 81-80. The Cardinals would go on to score seven more unanswered points, which included a jumper by Chris Ruiz, two free-throws by Munnerlyn and three more from the charity stripe by Errol Daniyan.
Daniyan was second on the team in scoring with 20 points and led the squad with seven boards and three blocks. Ruiz sank 15 points for the Cardinals and Steve Thomas contributed 11.
Farris Thomas started his first game of the year for the Cardinals, giving a solid performance of 3-for-4 from the field and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line for a total of eight points. Farris Thomas also pulled down five rebounds to tie Ruiz and Steve Thomas for second on the team.
For Oswego, Chad Burridge topped both teams with 28 points. Ryan Sheridan added 14 points and Conor Monaghan 11 to the Lakers' effort.
Plattsburgh hits the road next weekend to take on SUNYAC foes Brockport on Friday at 8 p.m. and Geneseo on Saturday at 4 p.m.
