BROCKPORT, N.Y. - The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team kicked off its State University of New York Athletic Conference opener in style on Friday with a 4-1 victory at Brockport, extending the Cardinals' road win streak to four games. Plattsburgh also ran its unbeaten streak to six games overall to improve to 6-1-1 on the season, while the host Golden Eagles are now 2-3-2 (0-1 SUNYAC).
Anis Makaren led the Plattsburgh offense with a goal and an assist, and reigning SUNYAC and ECAC Upstate Player of the Week Chris Taylor added a pair of assists.
Brockport scored its only goal in the 50th minute when goalkeeper Joe Marino punted the ball from his own box downfield as his counterpart mishandled it and crossed the goal line. That came 4 minutes and 18 seconds after Danny Byrnes scored his first goal of the season to give the Cardinals a 2-0 lead just 38 seconds into the second half.
Plattsburgh put the game away with 15 minutes to go as Anis Makaren and Mike Payne scored 53 seconds apart to make it a three-goal cushion. It was Makaren's team-high sixth goal of the year, and Payne's first of his career.
Andy Heighington made three saves to earn the win while Marino ended up with nine.
The Cardinals also held advantages in shots (16 to 9) and corner kicks (8-6).
