CASTLETON, Vt. - Chris Taylor and Pat Shaughnessy scored 1 minute and 37 seconds apart in the second half to lift the Plattsburgh State men's soccer team to a 3-1 victory Wednesday over Castleton State at Spartan Stadium. The Cardinals picked up their third straight road win and extended their unbeaten streak to four games (3-0-1) to move to 4-1-1 overall. The Spartans (3-3), who are favored to win the North Atlantic Conference title, lost for the first time on their new home field turf.
Plattsburgh took a 1-0 lead in the 32nd minute when Gurtej Dhillon collected a misplayed clear and lofted a pass from 35 yards out into John LoGuirato, who headed the ball past goalie Mike Anthony.
Castleton got the equalizer in the 48th as Billy Lund notched his first collegiate goal when he eluded a pair of Cardinal defenders, faked left and struck a knuckling shot over goalkeeper Andy Heighington.
Taylor's go-ahead goal was struck with pace from 25 yards into the top-left corner. Shaughnessy's insurance tally came via a Taylor corner kick into the penalty area where Anis Makaren headed a pass to the open goalscorer.
The Cardinals dominated shots (21-5) for the game, including 17 to 1 in the first half. Anthony made four saves in the opening 45 minutes to keep Castleton in the game.
Bart Misiak led a stout Plattsburgh defense by singlehandedly thwarting many offensive surges from the Spartans.
