Balanced Scoring Attack Leads Plattsburgh Past the Saints

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Five Plattsburgh State men's basketball players scored in the double-digits to help the team defeat St. Lawrence, 90-86. This included Carl Munnerlyn, who came off the bench to lead the Cardinals with 23 points on the night.

Plattsburgh now holds a 5-1 record for the season, while St. Lawrence drops to 1-3.

Along with Munnerlyn, Errol Daniyan (14 points), Steve Thomas (14), Chris Ruiz (12) and Ketema Brooks (10) all posted big numbers for Plattsburgh. Daniyan also led the team with eight rebounds and two blocks, while Steve Thomas dished out three assists and nabbed three steals.

For the game, Plattsburgh shot 81.5% (22-27) from the free-throw line, capitalizing on nearly every opportunity.

After taking the first half 41-36, Plattsburgh jumped out to a game-high lead of nine points twice during the second. The Saints refused to yield, however, and cut that lead down to two with 11 seconds left on the clock. Munnerlyn quickly sank two free-throws to put the Cardinals ahead by four, but St. Lawrence's Josh Sharlow countered with a layup with four seconds to go.

Munnerlyn was then fouled again a second later and made the shot before Plattsburgh called a timeout. Josh Sharlow then made and missed a free-throw shot each for the Saints after being followed by Plattsburgh's RJ Ponesse. Unlike Sharlow, however, Munnerlyn capitalized on both his attempts from the charity stripe when fouled by Sharlow with a second left. The Cardinals had already clinched the victory before St. Lawrence's Ralph Temgoua missed a three-pointer at the buzzer.

Not to be overlooked, St. Lawrence also threw up big numbers on the board. Garrett Sharlow led the game with 24 points and nine boards, followed by Andy Hoercher with 12 points. Josh Sharlow, Temgoua, Terry Parham and Nick Meunier all recorded 11 points during the night. Hoercher made five assists and Temgoua reached up for two blocks, as well.

Next up, Plattsburgh takes to the road this weekend against New Paltz on Friday at 8 p.m. and Oneonta on Saturday at 4 p.m.
