PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team won its 499th game in program history on Friday with a 1-0 victory over visiting Oneonta State, propelling the top-seeded and nationally 20th-ranked Cardinals into the State University of New York Athletic Conference championship game. Tournament host Plattsburgh (13-2-4 overall) will play second-seed Brockport, which was a 1-0 winner against Geneseo in today's first semifinal game at the Cardinals Field House Complex, on Saturday (1 p.m.). There is no admission charge.
Plattsburgh and No. 4-seed Oneonta played to a scoreless first half but it was the Cardinals that had the 2-0 edge in shots and most of the territorial control.
The Cardinals finally broke through against a strong goalkeeping performance by Johnathan Korn. On a set piece from near the left sideline about 35 yards from goal, Chris Taylor sent a free kick into the top of the goalie box where Joe Bogart had a flick header for his second goal of the season in the 74th minute. It was Taylor's 15th assist--two shy of tying the single-season school record.
Earlier in the second half, Plattsburgh had two excellent scoring chances but Korn made two saves on shots by Pat Shaughnessy and Bart Misiak from point-blank range. The senior goalie finished with five saves.
Plattsburgh's Andy Heighington, a freshman, made one save for his seventh career shutout.
The Cardinals outshot the Red Dragons 9-2 and had more corner kicks (3-2). Oneonta fell to 12-5-2.
Brad Lefort scored his fifth goal of the season to lift Brockport to a 1-0 win against the No. 3-seed Blue Knights, who end their year with a 9-7-2 mark. The Golden Eagles improve to 10-5-2 and will look to avenge a 4-1 loss at home to the Cardinals on Sept. 25. Jeff Palumbo was credited with an assist on the play.
Opposing goalies Mike Madarasz for Geneseo and Joe Marino for Brockport each had four saves. Brockport had advantages in shots (10-8) and corner kicks (3-2).
