PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. - Mackenzie Lee and Kayla McDougall scored their first goals of the season 14 seconds apart late in the second period as Plattsburgh State hung on for a thrilling 3-2 victory Saturday over Elmira in an Eastern College Athletic Conference West Division showdown of nationally ranked teams at the Stafford Ice Arena. The No. 4 Cardinals improve to 3-0 both overall and in the ECAC West while the second-rated Soaring Eagles lose their first of the year in four starts (3-1, 3-1). BOXSCORE
Plattsburgh's Mandy Mackrell made her first career start against the defending conference champion Soaring Eagles and made a career-high 26 saves to earn Turfer Athletic First Star of the Game honors. She stopped all 15 shots she faced in the third period--some from point-blank range--to keep the Cardinals in front.
All the scoring was done in the second period. Erika Shaubel ripped a slap shot from the right point on the blueline to give Plattsburgh a 1-0 lead 4 minutes and 11 seconds gone, scoring her first goal of the season on the power play. Caitlin Metcalf equalized with her first on the year 6:21 later before Lee and McDougall put the Cardinals ahead for good, 3-1. Lindsay Mitchell pulled Elmira within 3-2 on a power play goal with 30 seconds remaining.
Samantha Maguire had 26 saves for Elmira, including 11 in the first period to keep the Cardinals off the scoreboard.
Stephanie Moberg added two assists for Plattsburgh, which outshot Elmira by a 29-28 margin. Mitchell had an assist on Metcalf's tally for a two-point night on the Soaring Eagles' side.
