Shaughnessy Lifts No. 22 Cardinals to Draw at Saint Lawrence

Sophomore Scores on a Breakaway

CANTON, N.Y. -- Pat Shaughnessy's breakaway goal in the second half lifted nationally ranked Plattsburgh State to a 1-1 tie at Saint Lawrence in non-conference men's soccer action under a steady rain on Wednesday at Sandy MacAllaster Field. The No. 22 Cardinals are now 12-2-4 overall after finishing the regular season on an eight-game unbeaten streak (5-0-3), while the host Saints settle at 7-6-1 to break a four-game losing streak.

The Saints had the best chance to win it in the first overtime, but Brendan Gorman's shot hit the inside of the post and bounced away.

Shaughnessy took advantage of the Saint defense and split two defenders after the ball was headed up the field and went in alone on Saint goalie Nate Goss-Woliner, sending a shot to the far post for his seventh of the year to knot the game in the 58th minute.

Sam DeMello put SLU up 1-0 with an unassisted goal in the 14th minute when he scored on a direct kick from 20 yards out. The freshman increased his season goal total to six.

Despite the soggy conditions both teams had good looks on net, combining for 49 shots. SLU had the edge 28 to 21, including 7-4 in the two 10-minute overtime periods.

Andy Heighington had seven saves for the Cardinals, and Goss-Woliner finished with nine stops.
