Plattsburgh Battles Union (N.Y.) to Draw in Key East Region Matchup

Pat Shaughnessy Scores in Non-SUNYAC Contest

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y.-- The Plattsburgh State men’s soccer team gave up its first goal in five games and ended in a 1-1 tie with the Union College Dutchmen at the Field House Complex on Tuesday. With the draw, the Cardinals extended their home unbeaten streak against non-conference opponents to 28 games, going 26-0-2 since a 3-1 loss to Saint Lawrence on Oct. 27, 2004.

The Cardinals jumped to a 1-0 lead in the 19th minute. Erik Hakim picked up his first career collegiate point with an assist when he crossed the ball to sophomore midfielder Brandon Levine, who then centered to Pat Shaughnessy and he headed the ball into the back of the net. The goal was Shaughnessy’s sixth of the season, which ties him for second on the team with 18 points.

The Cardinals held Union off the scoreboard for the next 33 minutes until the Dutchmen answered with a goal of their own in the 52nd minute. After a Plattsburgh foul, a Union player sent a direct kick from the left side into the penalty area as John Mara found a loose ball in the 6-yard box and unguarded, he tapped in for his first goal of the season.

The two teams played the rest of the game physically but both couldn’t find the netting. Plattsburgh had a couple chances to go ahead within five minutes of the tying goal as Joe Griffin and Mike Payne sent shots wide from close range.

In the closing minutes of regulation, Union nearly pulled out the win when Jack Scott's floating shot hit the crossbar and sailed over the net with 1:07 left.

Plattsburgh held much of territorial play for the game, including 8-3 in corner kicks.  But the Dutchmen held an 8-7 shots advantage, including 3-1 in the two 10-minute overtime periods.
