Cardinals Close In on Top Seed for SUNYACs

PLATTSBURGH, N.Y. -- The Plattsburgh State men's soccer team inched closer to securing the No. 1 seed in the upcoming conference tournament on Saturday with a 3-0 victory over Fredonia State at the Cardinals Field House Complex. The Cardinals ran their unbeaten streak to five games (4-0-1) to improve to 11-2-2 overall and retain sole possession of first place with a 6-1-1 SUNYAC mark. The Blue Devils drop to 6-5-3 and 2-2-2 in the conference.

Matt Hamilton, Pat Shaughnessy and Joe Griffin each scored a goal and had an assist to carry the Plattsburgh offense. Hamilton put the Cardinals ahead to stay, 1-0, in the 19th minute, taking a feed from Shaughnessy in the box and heading the ball past Fredonia goalkeeper Thom Cavanaugh for his sixth of the year.

Besides the scoreboard, the Cardinals also dominated in shots (18-4), shots on goal (10-0) and corner kicks (9-0). Andy Heighington didn't have to make a save to earn his sixth shutout this season.

Cavanaugh ended up with seven saves.
